James nous raconte son exploit !
As you are already aware I completed the 880 mile bike ride from the southern tip of the UK to the northern tip (Land's End to John o'Groats).. It was a great experience personally and I would like to thank you for your very generous donation to l'etoile du martin. The route was 880 miles and was completed within our 7 days target:
- longest day in the saddle was 153 miles
- shortest day was 101 miles
- average speed was 17 mph - max speed was 44 mph
- we also cycled from the west coast to the east coast of Britain during afternoon of day 4 and morning of day 5
- best scenery was Scotland (so i dont sound biased bits of England like Cornwall, Shropshire, the area north west of Gloucester bordering Wales, and the sign saying 2 miles to the Scottish border are also good sights!)
- 4 punctures, 1 ripped tyre, 1 buckled wheel
- 1 crash (my friend cycled into the back of me at a RED traffic light - i suppose most cyclists dont obey traffic signals but it was a big roundabout with traffic heading for a motorway!!)
- burned 6500 calories per day each
- fuelled during the day by the worst diet one can imagine (energy bars, gels, jaffa cakes, biscuits, diet coke, lucozade, energy drinks, bananas, and cheese and ham toasted sandwiches). I fear for my teeth
- fuelled in the evening by pasta, steaks and beers (medicinal and dulls the pain!!). I can also confirm that Guinness really is good for you as the adverts claimed (before the advertising standards authority was established).
- weather wise we had rain, sun and headwinds (not good for cycling)
Overall it was a great experience and for the sake of our bodies probably 'once in a lifetime'!
Best regards, James
